GINGER AUSBAN
I grew up in North Alabama and loved going to school and was quite popular in high school, a high school cheerleader and voted class favorite until I made the mistake of falling victim to an older guy who was worried about going to Vietnam. He said if he went, he wouldn’t make it back. He’d die over there. I thought I loved him, but do you really know what love is at the age of 16? I gave in to his demands to prove that I loved him. He wanted me to marry him while I was just a junior in high school, but I told him no because I had a dream of going to college and discovering the cure for cancer and the common cold. I tell people today that’s the reason there’s still no cure—because I didn’t follow my dreams. But that’s a story for another book, maybe coming soon.
As a result, I got pregnant. My parents made me marry him. And of course, it was a big scandal around the school and all my so-called friends disappeared but one. With his encouragement, I still managed to graduate from high school with my regular class. I had a wonderful baby boy and a second son by the time I was twenty. At the age of 27, I did go to college and earned a BS degree in accounting. After finishing college I divorced my first husband, moved to Atlanta and was a single mom for a few years.
Going against the advice of my best girlfriend, I married my second husband, who gave me a great blessing of a daughter. That marriage lasted way too long and during that time I stayed very busy and worked several years as a Certified Public Accountant and served in Controller and CFO positions for various companies and it was during this time I wrote Memorial Road. I wrote Memorial Road by transcribing over 10 hours of recordings of my grandfather’s stories. I simply cut and pasted them into chronological order, adding only a few words to make the stories flow from one to the other.
Today, I own an accounting and tax preparation business, and I hold a securities license, offering financial planning for numerous clients.
In my spare time, I love cuddling with my husband, writing, quilting, and playing tennis.
I’m happily married to the real love of my life, who was my best friend in high school. We reunited at our 50-year class reunion. My daughter is a professional equestrian and together we live on a 40-acre horse farm in North Georgia. Between my husband and I, we have 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
